Starting in 2023, trombonist and singer and producer Nils Landgren will be the artistic director of Jazzradion, the Swedish Jazz Radio in the Swedish public broadcasting radio channel P2.
The assignment entails curating the content and developing the jazz selection for the listeners – together with the jazz editors at P2 and in collaboration with Berwaldhallen, the Swedish Radio concert hall. Among other, Radiojazzgruppen – The Radio Jazz Group – will be revived.
“The jazz selection at P2 has a long tradition and has played a significant role in Swedish jazz life. Now we want to develop the jazz at P2 even further, and therefore created this new role as Artistic Director. Nils Landgren is an international star with strong roots in Swedish music life and we are extremely excited about our upcoming collaboration” says Ella Petersson, P2
channel manager.
This assignment as Artistic Director for the Swedish Jazz Radio is for two years. The role entails having a holistic view on P2’s offer to the jazz audience but also to develop Radiojazzgruppen, which will re-emerge in different forms in the future.
“I am proud and happy for the trust in me to lead the Swedish Jazz Radio. I will bring my experience from a long and meaningful life as an artist and together with P2’s employees and musicians around the country, I will work to create greater interest in jazz-related music and reach out to more radio listeners. Bringing Radiojazzgruppen back to life is of course extra fun – an ensemble of which I was part of for many years and which I really look forward to redeveloping into an important part of the Swedish Jazz Radio”, says Nils Landgren.
Nils Landgren: Trombonist, singer and producer, he is one of Sweden’s foremost jazz musicians with a wide and deep experience from a long and unbeatable musical life where he worked with all the leading artists in Sweden as well as internationally. He is a professor at the University of Music in Hamburg and at the Conservatory of Music in Shanghai, as well as an honorary doctorate at Karlstad University.
Radiojazzgruppen, the Jazz Radio Group, was formed as a studio orchestra at Sveriges Radio in 1967 and was led by Arne Domnérus during the first decade and later on by Lennart Åberg. A large part of the Swedish Jazz elite participated in this band, among others Jan Johansson, Bengt Hallberg and Georg Riedel.
